Our client is a start-up, global specialty sweetener manufacturer based out of Europe with US offices/labs in Austin, TX

Based on growth, they are actively seeking to hire an experienced Senior Applications Scientist with confectionery and/or bakery ingredient application experience. The Applications Scientist reports to the VP R&D Applications – Americas

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES
Application/Product Development. Create great-tasting products that incorporate the company’s products and solutions, with a primary focus on the confectionery category. Relevant products include chocolate, compound, fillings, gummies and caramels. Products will include customer-specific projects as well as proactive developments to broaden and deepen the company’s application portfolio. Characterize developed products through analytical, sensory and other methodologies. Create documentation associated with developed products, including formulas, nutrition facts panels, ingredient statements, cost-in-use analysis and sensory results.

Customer Commercialization & Project Management. Provide on-site customer support during key R&D activities, including lab, pilot and plant trials to drive conversions and speed-to-market. Manage projects in partnership with sales team and coordinate between internal and external resources to expedite the product development process for customers.

Category & Industry Technical Knowledge. Understand and keep abreast of confectionery category market products, preferred ingredients and flavor profiles for countries and customers that we support (primarily US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia etc) to develop relevant products for our customers. Possess and further develop a strong technical knowledge base, especially on formulation and ingredient functionality. Stay informed of new ingredients, technologies, and competitor offerings. Demonstrate excellent technical problem-solving skills, looking across raw materials, formulas, process etc. to find solutions.

Sales Volume. Partner with the sales team to execute customer meetings and trade shows successfully, driving conversion. Create and present sample products and documentation for these activities as required.

Internal Teamwork and Collaboration. Collaborates with internal partners including Marketing, Finance, Supply Chain, Research & Development and Technical Services to support and achieve growth-oriented volume and revenue goals and objectives. Works to resolve any major issues that arise and works to identify and improve internal processes. Establishes and maintains strong relationships with colleagues.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

Must have at least a BA/BS degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Must have at least 5+ years of R&D, ingredient application experience in the confectionery/bakery category.
Must have some experience working with some of the following product types: chocolate, compound, fillings, gummies, caramel
Must be Action-oriented with ability to execute and deliver results.
Must have a “Can-do creative attitude”; a person that rolls up their sleeves to get things done.
Must have above average presentation and communication skills.
Must have a deep understanding of new product development, reformulation processes and the confectionery category.
Must be open to learning and taking on projects in categories outside of confectionery.
Must have a willingness to travel, primarily within the Americas and occasionally to Europe
