R&D MANAGER  (DAIRY INGREDIENTS/PROTEIN HYDROLYSATES)

Job Description:

Our client is one of the world’s leading multinational companies developing producing and selling natural, nutritional and high-quality dairy nutritional ingredients and other functional ingredients. They produce and market a broad range of high-quality, distinctive ingredients and semi–finished products based on whey, milk and other dairy components. These products are sold to food and beverage, sports nutrition; infant foods and pharmaceuticals manufacturers across the world.

Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experiencedR&D MANAGER – Protein Hydrolysates to lead their R&D team located in the Albany, NY area. The R&D MANAGER will develop and ensure the execution of the strategy and objectives for the R&D department for Hydrolysates (bio-technology) for Infant, Cell, Diagnostics, and Sports Nutrition. They will realize strategic projects and manage a group of highly qualified professionals, in line with the functional and R&D strategy, in order to ensure the realization of the departmental objectives and strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and motivate a technical staff of up to 10 Food Scientists.

  • Manage strategic direction of R&D group.

  • Prioritize project load and ensure projects are viable.

  • Manage a multi-million dollar budget.

  • Monthly R&D project reviews and semi-annual R&D reviews.

  • Liaison with R&D in Europe.

  • Interact with sales and marketing for customer support, product improvements, new product ideas and cost reductions.

  • Interact with manufacturing for process improvements, cost reductions and transition of new products and processes.
  • Troubleshooting production and customer issues.

  • Assist QC with calibration and implementation of new production lab equipment.

  • Assist with design, development and transfer of new analytical test methods.

  • Develop capital requests and equipment needs for the Product Transition Group.

  • Participation in charter teams (ex. Quality, Cost Reduction and Operations).

  • Participation in Change Control Board.

 The R&D Manager will be directly responsible for the R&D Departments:  Strategy, Year Plan/Budget, Innovation, Technology Transfer, Resource Management, Project Manager, Technical Expert, Organizational Development, People Management, Relationship Management and Knowledge and Competency Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MUST have a BA degree (MS degree preferred) - in Food Science, Dairy Science, Biochemistry, Food Nutrition, Biology or Similar Science.

  • MUST have at least 5+ years of relevant R&D experience with: DAIRY INGREDIENTS, DAIRY PROTEINS, PROTEIN HYDROLYSATES and/or INFANT FORMULA used in INFANT/SPORTS/CELL NUTRITION, MEDICAL NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS ETC.

  • Must have managerial or supervisory experience, having supervised Food Scientists in a professional R&D setting.

  • Must be able to lead multidisciplinary, international technical teams with the focus on developing new products and implementing product and/or process changes.
  • Must be able to translate knowledge and problems into concrete actions to meet internal and external customer demands.

  • MUST have a strong business acumen and be a key business partner for the division.

  • MUST be able to determine and steer the business implications of change-management.

  • MUST have the skills to manage a professional R&D organization
  • MUST be able to diagnoses and problem solve while manage complex multidisciplinary projects.

  • MUST have excellent communication skills, (verbal and written) and have experience interacting with customers.

  • MUST be able to travel as needed.
